Hey all! I'm currently getting ready for the Artist's Alley at Eirtakon and making some anime-related fan made stuff to sell. I will update this post with more item lists in the meantime so check it for any changes!

15 Sept: I have two previews of a couple of things for sale, namely my 'Rei Advertises Intrumentalite' print and the Allied Group of the various Axis Powers Hetalia charms I'm making.

16 Sept: Ha! Nearly forgot I'm doing Manga style portraits! Finished pencil drawing for €6, and inking for an extra €4! I've done a commission recently featuring the client rendered manga-style from photos, so here it be is as an example! (pencils)

28 Sept: The first of my Touhou magnets are up, the first being of everyone's favourite suppository shotting rabbit babe, Reisen from Project Touhou.

4 October: The first of my Secret colour prints is complete! You'll get to see what they look like at and after the con. :) Sorry!

7 October: Added Touhou Magnets preview image.

12th October: Some slightly major changes, people. I'd prepared a Naruto Print, but thanks to some accidental rescaling in some of the prints as well as a few blue drops of ink on many, the price will be reduced to €3. Also I've ditched the magnets for stickers instead due to a lack of experience with magnet paper (it might fry some computer components of my printer!) and not worth the risk to experiment. Good news is that I can make more stickers than magnets right now, they will be sold at a much reduced price to €1.50 each and you can buy the four for €5!

I'm keen on making a comic, and these are the lead characters which I inked today (and last night). The Dublin City Comic Convention is on its way in December, and I hope to debut my work there. :3

Yes, this is the one that appeared at my End of Year show. It may be rough around the edges, but dammit, I spent months making it! It's 10% game, 90% reading, and you may need to research into what the Visual Novel format is before being sorely dissapointed/aroused.

Just finished colouring an STCO comic, but today is my day of rest. :D I got a Comickers book before I left Ireland back in April, and an 'Up' hardback book from a housemate. Plus a cute n' kawaii sticker set from another housemate! It's all sorted!

UPDATE: Went to see 'Tooth Fairy' (only for the cheesiness and I could nit-pick some sexual undertones in it...) in the cinema, plus fetched a crayon and colouring book from a housemate (explainations later!), a singing wiggling thing that yells when you throw it hard enough, a mini Lucky Buddha thing and a nice day for all! :)

Triple Life: Thumbnails and Storyboards

NOT the special update, but...

Here are some little developmental sketches I made before I started major work on Triple Life. I wanted to explore how I could resourcefully get the story across.

I needed some kind of infamous opening scene - avoidng the spoiler here, I made a manual that misled the player into thinking they were going to play the stern everyman Mayor Samuel Delamaine.

This was the bit that was hugely condensed down for time and sanity: I had an extra couple of characters that were plot mediators between the Claymason and Sunaru Institute missions. You had a choice of a local scantily-clad super heroine or a ditzy conspiracy theorist drop hints (I wanted to have hidden symbols in the backgrounds!).

This made it: the story splits in two if you decide to answer the phone or open the letter. Friggin' twin programming!

BONUS: The Claymason History! After understanding what the Freemason Calipers symbolise, I kind of screwed with the idea and made a suitable Claymason backhistory and emblem badge. This was a cutscene in the game where Simon automatically explains the Claymason's history.

TL: Trinian Cel Sheet

Booyah! The first Triple Life art post here! So, yes, this is part of my Major Project - I'm working on a visual novel that is also a Sim with a twist. This is a cel sheet full of the lead character's (an Evil Overlord of sorts in real life) myriad expressions.

I'm going to assemble a step-by-step process at some point, but I basically done a rough structural sketch, cleaned it up with a mechanical pencil, and coloured it all in Photoshop. Et voila! Expect more characters soon!

I've recently changed the little 'reaction tabs' at the bottom of each of my posts; they explain themselves, but as I post 90% drawings here, I would like a little feedback on how to push the content I post even further, even if now this looks like a voting system on what I should do next. I'd mainly like to focus on more finished art, but as I'll be starting my Major Project soon, I'll be doing all sorts of character sheets and info and want some commentary on my ideas. I plan to start a new blog solely for that, if possible.

I designed these characters when I was 15 years old circa 2001: you could tell I just wanted to get to the fun part of actually drawing them, without worrying about anatomy and the techniques I would learn in college years later. XD So... I rediscovered these in my bedroom during my visit back home for Christmas, and picked the three less generic ones (too oversaturated with manga-style as a kid to create my own look)... The original name for Briny (the Squid-lady) was a bit daft, though.

I've also started an Opencanvas post on my Conceptart thread, where I update just that post with random doodles I make with the program. It's a good beginner-friendly program for those who like painterly effects but is unsure about Photoshop brushes and things. Just remember to switch the language from Japanese to English under the 'Help' option! :D

Alchemy's a freeware graphics program used for initial vector-based sketches, but by itself, I find, that it creates its own beauty. Pretty nifty brush FX too. :) (This was done in Mirror Mode. There is also a Microphone command that affects the brush when music/sound is played.)

It's all for my market enterprise research, and discover the inner workings of an animation studio, as well as my role as a concept artist after college. A Brief's Tail Storyboards

These are the storyboards for 'A Brief's Tail'. They are more or less the final drafts, as some scenes were omitted due to length (and our sanity).

The intro included a pan across the character's room, noting that he recycled everything. :) He grabs a sewing kit and disturbs his pet cat.

He sits down to repair his old under wear.

The cat, now awake, wants his master's attention.

The cat hops up and plays with the underwear, until the phone rings.

The cat tugs at the pants his master's left behind and....

Inspired by his 'make do and mend' attitude...

He makes these. o_O; The 'catfud' didn't make it. ;)

College Work: A Brief's Tail

This is the film I'd worked on circa 2007: A Brief's Tail (directed by Billy Shing, as his idea got picked. :D) My main role was being the Storyboard Artist, but as you do with college work, I had to pitch in and did some animation (the character actions in the first scene, and when the character gets up to answer the phone) as well as clean-up (the 'sewing' and 'shocked' scenes. :) )

This was later screened, cinema-size, at the IFI in Dublin to a great audience. :D

'Create Your Own Manga' Workshop Exhibition

Perfect Vision Academy is proud to present the 'Create Your Own Manga' Workshop Exhibition, featuring diverse artwork and comics created by the young and talented workshop attendees. Manga refers to Japanese Comics and their unique visuals, and the exhibiton is a perfect example of how young people, especially children, are influenced by its style.

The exhibition is running from 11am until 3pm on Saturday, February 28th, at the Perfect Vision Academy, which is located opposite the Tourist Office on Mayoralty Street, Drogheda. As well as showing young artists' works, there will also be free Manga Art demonstrations and information about the next Manga Workshop Term. For more information on the workshop content and future classes, contact Leeann at 087 262 4390. Admission to the exhibit is free and all are very welcome.

Manga Demo at Scotch Hall

On Saturday, Perfect Vision Academy hosted some free art lessons and demonstrations at Scotch Hall Shopping Centre, Drogheda. There was also a raffle to win a portrait by Sean (pictured here in action!), or an original oil painting. The funds raised by the raffle went to Drogheda Women's Refuge.

Character Design

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who are attending my many Manga Workshops! I hope you all left a little more enlightened and even more encouraged to draw. In fact, keep drawing! (And keep your work together in a folder for next time!) You can find the original flyer in my last post for you to print out and keep.

As of writing, I'm about to start the third of my classes, but so far I've discussed the findamentals of basic character design. The thing I stressed most was to know your character inside out, in both personality and appearence. I got some very interesting examples from my class, and had everyone pointing in the right direction in what to try next. I also encouraged them to try making model sheets of their characters' expressions and how proportions can play a role in the style of a character. (I got them to draw as much as possible during the week, before we get onto backgrounds and comic book layouts.)

This following piece is slightly more advanced; I didn't teach this bit (much) on the first day, as one would be expected to have a basic idea of how to design a character. I'm pushing the method a bit more here.

During my Visual Language class at animation college, I was suggested to go more 'abstract' in making concept work. Abstract art, as far as I can remember, is to look at the subject and observe it's colour, texture, structure, etc as individual pieces (rather than the whole subject as a figure/object), and re-create the subject using one of those themes. It may be more elaborate than that, but bear with me.

I scribbled down abstract shapes of emotions: Joy and Sadness. I made some emphasis on tears, hanging posture and timidity for Sadness. For Joy I lashed out some perky bubbly shapes, smiles and glee all around. I even included stickmen for posing the emotions. The colours were quite obvious, but in the end I feel they maketh the characters.

For me, the personality and activity of the character matters to me more than the final look. Personally, there's no point in making an extroverted, lively, sporty character and then go and hide her over-active body (language) in bulky robes or restrictive outerwear. (And NO neutral poses there!) From the abstact sketches, I made patterns and symbols from them afterwards.
